"Fuck the Poem" is my favorite if I had to pick one, but when I was going through the collection to pick out a few others I enjoyed, I found I was tabbing almost every one. Truth be told, I'm still a bit cold on mythological beings, and these poems were my least favorite of the lot. The result is a rhythmically hypnotic tour de force - and a hugely ambitious leap forward for one of the UK's most talented and compelling young writers.This book of poetry blew me away. Her poems on blindness are flooded with light: the sun, moon and firelight of ancient Greece; modernity’s streetlights, smartphones and “flickering, ultraviolet pixels”. Yet I often felt as if something was missing, as if there could have been more.The first poem, Tiresias, is possibly my favorite poem ever. . Walking in the forest one morning, a young man disturbs two copulating snakes - and is punished by the goddess Hera, who turns him into a woman. Weaving elements of classical myth, autobiography and social commentary, Tempest uses the story of the gender-switching, clairvoyant Tiresias to create four sequences of poems: 'childhood', 'manhood', 'womanhood' and 'blind profit'. I read it in about two sittings. I felt like this was written for me. I don't naturally reach for poetry so I don't know how to rate this accurately.
