In 1964 a group of 7-year-old children were interviewed for the groundbreaking documentary Seven Up. Color Adjustment is a 1992 documentary film that traces 40 years of race relations and the representation of African Americans through the lens of prime-time television entertainment, scrutinizing television's racial myths. Revisiting the programs "Beulah," "The Nat King Cole Show," "Julia," "I Spy," "Good Times," and "Roots," viewers see how bitter racial conflict was absorbed into non-controversial series. "You are ?" That was a Hollywood maid," says Esther Rolle, the star of "Good Times," of the grinning actress (Louise Beavers) who made Beulah so agreeable to white audiences. Even so-called breakthrough TV, like the Diahann Carroll sitcom "Julia" (1968-71) placed its idealized Black heroine into an impossibly color-blind society that interviewee Carroll admits was blandly one-dimensional. "Course! It presents a no-win situation, a set-up in which any Black who succeeds on the tube is demonized for selling out.
The politically correct commentators slam the mini-series "Roots" for obliquely suggesting that the struggle of American Blacks ended with Reconstruction; nobody refers to itsfollowup "Roots: The Next Generation." The film, which opens today at the Anthology Film Archives, devotes attention to Nat (King) Cole's variety show, which marked the first non-comedic series starring a black performer and was canceled for lack of sponsorship after a single season. Response to Color Adjustment. "Could prime-time break the mold of comedy and still comfort white America?" By the end of the doc, the audience is left with the feeling of the UN-appreciation of African Americans towards progress of their representation in television.Looking for some great streaming picks? Carroll acknowledges that she herself was "guilty of something we had to do for survival, and that's called adjustments."
