July 31st 2014 The book is 4 stars because I am not sure how well it works when Macdonald parallels her life with that of the writer T H White, who also tried to tame a hawk and on whose attempts Macdonald rather sits in judgement.. She has researched other falconry writers well. It has received almost universal acclaim, rave reviews and won the 2014 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction. Helen Macdonald has managed to blend the two genres beautifully. It's also about the beauty of the natural world and the natural desire of the human mind to transcend. Instead of seeing the process as a war of wills like White did, which led to serious mistakes and struggles, she takes a more scientific and successful approach. Helen and Mabel play together at home. She had the experience of working with smaller, more common hawks in her youth, but goshawks are big and notoriously unruly. There are some lovely moments in this book if you can find them...but it might take more than a hawk to maintain an interest. Much of the appeal of the book for me came from the beautiful use of language. To say it won the Costa Book of the Year and to be given widespread praise and five-star reviews by many including being labelled as a ‘soaring triumph’ by the Telegraph, I expected something better, something much much better.Before starting in on my review, I took a quick look at what my fellow Goodreaders thought.
