I've been snowboarding as long as I can remember and that happened to me on the easiest run there is... Yeah I think i'll just wear a helmet to be honest. This is exactly the type of thing I'm talking about.I do mountain biking and once I was literally just riding down the road (not even a MTB trail, just a road that had been resurfaced so was slippy) and I suddenly fell and landed on my head.I didn't get any bad injuries but since then I've been really cautious about my head. I realise I am being a bit of a gatekeeper as I've sort of got caught up in calling people stupid for not wearing a helmet which isn't really the overarching point I'm trying to make. The point I want to make is that it's stupid how some skateboarders go on and on about it being a free sport with no rules but then have a ton of dumb rules like "no mall grabbing" "don't wear Thrasher" "don't wear a helmet unless you skate vert".
And I also think that the callous attitude you think a lot of people have towards helmets themselves is completely wrong, while I do think that them being seen as 'uncool' does play a small part in it over all I think it's more a matter of inconvenience and choosing to carry around the least gear, I know a lot of people who use helmets when they're unsure of their ability to land something, but everyday skating for people like me is annoying as hell when you have to lug a bunch of shit around. No one's telling you that you can't or shouldn't wear a helmet, but you don't have to wear one, and no one should be made to do anything they don't want to in skateboardingYour post started with tons of genuine merit but reading through the comments its become extremely apparent you're just out to gatekeep and put others down here.If someone doesn't want to wear a helmet that's their decision and their right. Wearing protective gear is incredibly important while skateboarding. It's actually pretty convenient sometimes. That being said, I understand not wearing a helmet for some people, especially the ones who grew up never wearing one. If your child refuses to wear a helmet while skateboarding, point them in the direction of Mike Vallely. It's similar to all of those things, it's the kind of elitism and immaturity that honestly makes a laughing stock of skateboarding. If you don't wear a helmet, that's none of my business.
And thats just fine. This is a great way to view this. This can be a rule at a skatepark, or even a city or state law.If you are a kid, and your parents have their own rule about wearing a helmet, then you should obey them and wear one.Otherwise, it's simply up to you, but here's the truth—you My advice is that any time you have wheels under your feet, you should have a helmet on your head. Moreover, it has molded 3D design that gives it an extra cool look. Wrist gaurds? I'm not scoring any cool points as it is. If she wasn't wearing a helmet she would be dead. I only grab it when I plan on doing something where I feel uncomfortable or plan on pushing my speed. In addition to letting them choose their helmet, there’s tons of new accessories to make a helmet look even cooler. In fact, most skate parks require riders to wear pads and skateboard helmets upon entering.
The nylon straps adjust for a great fit. Sometimes you just have a bad day or don't concentrate. Helmets aren’t the ol’ bulky plastic brain buckets of yesteryear.
Also, when people will happily wear a hat or baseball cap but not a helmet. It's the difference between mild concussion and brain hemorrhage.
If people weren't bothered what they looked like/worried about being judged, I guarantee that 99% of skaters would wear a helmet because they'd be willing to get used to it.It's just the safety benefits are insane. Again though kids are cruel and most certainly have there phases of thisI do really think that any kind of hate or whatever you think it is that people who wear helmets are getting is pretty unfounded, at least as a widespread problem sort of thing. Is that not a valid reason? If someone makes fun of you for wearing a helmet, fuck them. But otherwise there really is no excuse. Just like it took me a while to get over my fear of driving after I was injured from getting rear ended while stopped at a red. There's a key difference here in that a brain injury is life changing whereas most other injuries you could get in skateboarding are not. As a grown person, I feel much less invincible now and my brain is how I provide for the life I live.
Who the hell decided that no one can ever hold their board by the trucks? Don't put yourself at risk for the sake of looking cool. The entire concept of " posers" has always annoyed me.
